Hello all.
I have an hp4100 that on power up, only shows stars on display and will not initialize.
I have tried a new toner cartridge, fuser unit, formatter, tried taking out the jet direct card and a cold reset.
None of the above has worked but I am able to print an engine test by pressing the button on the side.
Any ideas would be most appreciated.

you need to reseat the mem chips that are located in the side pannel.. they are basically like ram chips where you just have to pop the lever for them to come out...

there should be 2 chips.. one is going to be the program NVRAM and the other will be RAM or whatnot...

give it a go..
I'm sure you've seen where they are if you've already torn it apart

Make sure the slots are clean and they are firmly in place.. you may have to blow that puppy away and rebuild the firmware but I'm sure its just loose

GL!

This is a symptom that the system board is knackered. But as Auger282 recommends above, check the ram chips are firmly installed and also check other connections are sound as these could account for the system board not starting.

Needing a new toner or even a maintenance kit will not produce the *****s on startup.
