Can this be upgraded to 5? I confirmed that system has fremem with 8 digits. If it can be uograded can I just uograde from 3.2 to 5 or do i need to upgrade to 4 then. Customer wants remote hot desking and I read where this can be with 5 without advance networking license.
Thanks in advance!

The IP Office needs to be a PCS 8 or higher hardware version. See below picture the upgrade path:

So first upgrade to R4.2 and then load R5.

Why the Upgrade after all this time?
Is there some feature you require, if so would it not make more sense to bite the bullet & replace the obsolete hardware otherwise "If it ain't broke don't fix it!"

Do things on the cheap & it will cost you dear

the only real thing I could think of is SIP extensions because SIP trunks could be done with 4.2 which is my favourite release :)

I am however with IPGuru I would replace the processor and keep the licenses and phones.

They are in need of remote hot desking as the IT department moved to other system in scn. They have a total 5 sites. Main site has 2 PRI circuits so an upgrade would be costly. I am trying to convince them but its the old if it aint broke saying. I am thinking possibly going with IP phones for IT department. Does anyone know if you can still get IP endpoints for that old of a system

If memory serves the 406v2 didn't have enough RAM to keep the config backed up in memory and still do the upgrade. So the purpose of that xx.999 loader is to give you a firmware that can handle the upgrade process and still keep your config in memory and apply it after the firmware upgrade.

Personally I don't think I ever had a xx.999 firmware upgrade ever go smoothly. I just started using the DTE port to wipe the firmware and have it pull the new firmware I wanted (because that's where every upgrade led to in the end.) The point is you should make sure you have the ability to DTE into the 406v2 and know the steps before you upgrade. Some kind soul wrote up that information and put it in the FAQ but you still need to make sure you have a cable and a serial port.

At 3.2 on the IP400 series I don't think there was any licensing for IP endpoints. Everything just used VCM channels and they charged an exorbitant amount for the hardware. 406 VCMs should be cheap if they're still out there. You want the ones in fours (VCM4, 8 or 16) not the ones in 5s (VCM5, 10 ,20) because of the echo cancellation.

All good advises but to my opinion there is nothing wrong upgrading to R5.
As there is a SCN, VCMs are in the systems.
New IP phones for this release will be the current 1600 series, 9600 phones are not supported on R5
