n00b Warning:

OK... I have tasked myself with upgrading our software levels on all 8 of our 406's. The reason I'm doing it instead of a qualified Avaya guy is that our support company want to charge us LOADS of cash to perform the upgrades... which are free... so it ain't gonna happen.

We have one site on 2.1 already, one on 2.0 and 6 on 1.4 - all installed by the supplier.

I need to get them all to 2.1 now and arrange an upgrade to 3.0 in the near future.

I've been reading a few tips on the forum here and I think I SHOULD be able to do it without too much trouble. I have a test system to practice on first but I just want to ask a few questions before getting in too deep.

1) I have read that I'm best to upgrade the systems to 2.0 before going to 2.1... is this the case? If so... why?

2) If I have any major issues and need to recover the system, provided of course that I have a backup, is it easy to get back to the pre-upgrade state?

3) We have digital and analogue expansions... will software upgrades auto detect these and keep the same configuration?

Thank you kindly in advance... I'm sure I'll have more questions when I start my task in a couple of weeks.

although there is no fee from Avaya for upgrade firmware for the IP Office it would still take time & resorces for your maintainer to upgrade your systems this is why they would raise a charge (Unles the upgrade was necessary to resolve a problem the WE certainly would not charge)

UPgrading the IP406 is a relatily simple process if ypu follow all the rules see FAQ940-5354 but you may invalidate your maintanance agreement if you do it yourself (expect to recieve a bill if your maintainer is required to fix any issues).

If you still want to do it yourself the answeres to your questions are as follows

1) you would probably be OK to go direct from 1.4 to 2.1 without problems although it is recomended to go to V2.0 1st (keep a copy of the original CFG in casew of problems). one the upgrade has completed download & resent the config using the correct version of manager.

2) see FAQ940-5354

3)The upgrade process should upgrade all IPO modules.

It's probably in the FAQ but always remember to have a fixed IP address on the same subnet, and try to have the PC connected directly to the LAN ports (i've had some stuff up on other hubs and so on)

I also upgrade the 406 on its own first and once that is complete tick the other boxes on the other modules and upgrade them.

Do recommend going to version 2.0 first aswell

Oh and don't have two managers open on two different computers!
