I have a project to convert an MM from 4 to 5 digits. Is there a way in MM to convert the mailboxes without deleting them? Its an MM 2.0.

Thanks.

I'm trying to find out the same thing. I found where you change the overall mailbox length and range of mailboxes, but no one can tell me what will happen to the existing mailboxes. After this step, you use mailbox manager to change the key from x to y digits for each individual mailbox.

If you find an answer, please share.

I have not tried this but you may be able to use mailbox manager to change from 4 to 5 and then reload the FEDB to the MAS. after you chang the ext in th vmsc to 5. don't know.

I finally had time to test this out. If you change the mailbox length in the MSS you can either use the MSS to modify each mailbox or you can use the Mailbox Manager to "change the key". Once I changed the mailbox I looked at the fedb and it updated that as well. I didn't do the final test and logon to the mailbox since I didn't have any ports connected to my test system, but that would be the last step to verify if it worked.

CheckRCT,

Thanks for testing this out. I'm tempted to trying this on a weekend as a test:

1) Change the mailbox length in MSS
2) Change one mailbox to the new length and test it.

Do you think this will hose the system if I then change back to the old length, all mailboxes will be OK after test or not?

Jim

I would try it out. I don't think it will be a problem to go back and forth on a weekend, but that is just a guess. I would make a copy of the fedb.mdb on the MAS and do a backup on the MSS beforehand to be safe.

Also make sure you change the "number of digits in a mailbox" field on the General tab of the Telephone User Interface section of the MAS VMSC.

We also have a project to move from 4 digit to 5 digit. We were able to get an Avaya docuemnt that outlines the steps in order, but Avaya is not confident in MM's ability to take the changes without a complete reload. Were you able to move from 4 to 5 digits, Was Avaya required? How did you do it?

Procedure

Most IMPORTANT- Have a backup in the event you must return

1. Note: There was some down time involved & recommend to end-users to unselect the ‘remember password’ on those screens so you can change logins when the system is rebuilt (if applicable).

2. a. On the Messaging Application Server (MAS), change the number of digits in a mailbox from x to x
Start/Programs/Avaya Modular Messaging/Voice Mail System Configuration Double-click on the Telephone User Interface Icon
On the General Tab, go the “Number of Digits in Mailbox” field and make the change.
Modular Messaging (MM) responds “All mail boxes will be invalidated, do you want to continue?”

2. b. PBX changes (if applicable) refer to respective Configuration Note

3. Change the mailbox number range(s) on the Message Storage Server (MSS) & digit length Global Administration- Networked Machine Management-Edit Networked Machine

4. a. On the MSS, change the following mailbox & extension numbers in the respective order listed:
Global Administration- Subscriber Management- Manage
-Postmaster
-Fax Postmaster
-ELA Shadow Mailbox
-Email address field – change mailbox number
-Broadcast Mailbox
-All Subscriber Mailboxes
-Secondary Extension field
-Back-up Operator field
-PDL – will it be auto updated or does end user need to modify their list?
-All ELA Mailbox Lists

4. b. On the Messaging Application Server (MAS)
-PBX origin number (if applicable) - Start- Programs- AVM- VMSC- PBX- “Out going Call” tab
-Default/After-hours Receptionist (if applicable) - Start- Programs- AVM- VMSC- Telephone User Interface
-Fax Mailbox- Start- Programs- AVM- VMSC-
-Caller applications & respective associations (if applicable and/or where necessary)
-Stop and Start Messaging Application for changes to take effect

5. Run a manual nightly and weekly audit on the MSS (this will “clean-up” the LDAP database)
Utilities- Audits- (Mail box, Mailing List, Recorded Names, Subscriber Data Audit)

6. Resynchronize the Message-Waiting Indicator (MWI) State and Front End Database (FEDB) databases on the MAS
Must be accomplished by Modular Messaging (MM) Trunk Access Code (TAC) & must contact when finished

7. Test
-Dial Voice Mail (VM) system from a phone with Voice Mail & insure you hear prompt to enter password
-Log into mailbox and press 2 to send a message (local mailbox, ELA, PDL)
-Dial an extension (with a MM mailbox) that covers to MM and insure personal greeting plays
-Leave a message an insure MWI is turned on
-Log into mailbox, listen and delete message and insure MWI is off

8. Update the Message Networking server (if applicable)
Should occur after all changes occur on MSS

9. Change the length of digits in log-in for Client Access and Subscriber Options (if applicable)

Existing Mailbox data was successful in migrating to new extension length!
