It is my understanding that you need sort of a patch to get this to work. I believe you can find it at discreet's website or maybe try max3d.com.

My brother had this same problem. I will double check with him to see how he fixed it and post the information tomorrow.

If you have a shortcut on your desktop to 3DSmax try to change that, or start the program from its original directory. The path its looking for under "all users" is a network path, and since you dont want to run a network version, that might be the problem. Could be a solution, please let me know if it helped!

You might want to go back to 98 or use 2000 pro which is the most stable for max or wait until discreet and microsoft get the bugs out of xp

Error 1606 Could not access network location"::\Documents and Settings\All users\Desktop"

This error is making me mad! Although, Combustion 2.0 (another discreet product) works under Win XP Pro. I've tried everything for 3ds max to work with xp. I've changed it's directory from a lot of diffren't folders, but it still gives me that damn error 1606!

Have installed the update to the licence handler via the cdilla website as the old version supplied with max 4 doesn't run under winxp

ANSWER TO RD02:
I called autodesk and they said XP home is not compatible with MAX 4 only XP PRO.

install the c-dilla3.25.010 C-Dilla licensing software from discreets web site.

When installing 3DS in XP just choose the option that installs the software for the current user and the 1606 error will disapear. C-dilla3.25.010 is also required.

The above link to MS Support page and the equivalent registry changes helped me!
I was having trouble installing certain progs under winXP Pro, getting the same error 1606.

I changed the registry and now it works fine!

All users getting that error should really visit:

Cheers for the tip!
