3d max render farm

Hello all,
I would like to setup a large render farm and would like some adivise. First off I thinking that a hardware based render farm rather the a software based on is the best bet. We run AutoCad and 3D studio max and currently network render over about 20 machines. I was looking into different SGI machines and Racks as well as Verari Racks. Is this the best way to go? I was think using Xeon processors rather then Itanium but am open to suggestions.
