Director 8.5 has an extensive set of tools for creating and animating 3D content, for web-based material it's definitely the most powerful tool, there are many prewritten 3d behaviours to control rotation of a shape etc.

If your Math is up to it you should also be able to create reasonable 3d effects in Flash. Although I think to get the sphere animation you want that you'll have to investigate the new drawing API in Flash MX. Slainte
