3D Graphics for Dummies

I am a novice VB 6.0 programmer. I am currently developing an application for Mechanical Engineers. As the user enters information into the program, I would like for the program to generate a 3D Scale Image of the equipment that is being modelled. If possible I would like to do this using existing code so that I can utilize existing can routines. I am assuming that you can get DLL's that have these routines, but having a little difficulty finding them.

Can someone tell me where I should begin in adding this capability to my program?
