Hi happy people! :)

Recently our small company purchased new gigabit router (L3 switch) to optimize our internal network traffic. So far we use only 1 subnet (192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0) with static IP addresses (about 80 nodes). Our 4 servers are Windows 2003 Server & Windows 2000 Server with Active Directory acting as file, print, dns, database servers. Our workstations are mostly Windows XP SP2 and some older Windows 2000 SP4.

A week ago I implemented new router to the network and connected it to our 2 switches (each serving 1 floor in our building) as the diagram shows:

All workstations point to the L3 switch (acting as core switch) as the default gateway. Blue lines mark VLAN tagged trunks, red lines mark simple patch cable connections.

Currently I'd like to create 4 maybe 5 VLANs (port based) while keeping the same IP addresses for all workstations (no additional subnets). Generally all went well except for inter-vlan routing which I cannot get to work. At the moment test computers from VLANs other than VLAN1 cannot communicate with server or internet gateway that are localted in VLAN1.

I understand that I need to create IP interfaces for each VLAN, so workstations from all VLANs can get access to servers and interntet, but I cannot find any how-to anywhere. I tried googling, 3com knowledgebase, some other forums... no real help so far.

Does anyone know how to setup inter-vlan routing on 3COM SuperStack3 switch 3870 in my simple scenario? Thanks in advance!

Best regards,
Kuba.

shame to reply myself. anyways it seems that 3COM router does not allow to use multiple VLANs within just 1 subnet. Everything started working right away after moving VLAN2 machines to another subnet. I'm still waiting for confirmation of this situation from 3COM.

3COM support confirmed that multiple VLANs require separate subnets for each VLAN and IP interfaces (each VLAN in other subnet). No other way around this. Since all clear I better start reconfiguring workstations IP settings. For those folks that like me use static IP settings I recommend telnet and netsh commands - very useful! Still lots of manual work but at least no running involved. Also don't forget to do "ipconfig /flushdns" and "ipconfig /registerdns" after netsh applied changes.

Case solved.
