Hello:
I've been reading a lot of documentation, but I don't understand much how segmentation works. I have a 3Com SuperStack II Ps Hub 40 with two segments. Three ports are added to the first segment, and the rest are added to the second segment. The hub was configured a long time ago by another person. The fact is that the machines connected to the ports of the first segment are working in a range of ip's, different of the range of the machines connected to the ports of the second segment. If I try to connect a machine in the second segment, with an ip of the range belonging to the first segment, it doesn't work. ¿Why? I believe there is no way to configure a segment or even a specific port in a specific range of ip's. Is it due to the segmentation? All the machines in a segment must work with an ip in the same range? Is there any way to specify the range of ip's in which a segment must work?

Thanks a lot.

hi,

segmentation is just like making a single hub into
multiple, virtually independent hubs...in your case
a single hub was made into two.

all the machines which are connected on the first
segment will not see the machine connected on the
second segment, unless you cross connect the 2
segments. but connecting the 2 segments might create
some prolems e.g. a loop.

you can configure the hub and change the sementation
using the cd which comes with the hub or you can
download the software from the 3com site.
