I have a 3com NAS device with a 20gig hard drive in it. I would like to change the 3.5" hard drive for a 2.5" one (so its not so noisy) but it doesn't seem to like it.

I have managed to ghost over the operating system. Does anyone know if this should have worked or am I trying the impossible

I don't know whether you can do that, but ussualy, storage vendors make the NAS/SAN arrays with specific disk drives in order to certify them, and sometimes put their own microcode in the disk drive (example, EMC, NetApp,HP,IBM).
