3Com AP will not allocate LAN IP unless on Factory settings

I run an Apple PowerBook with Airport 11g and have had no trouble accessing many different wireless APs until i finally installed a 3Com 3RWE454G72 AP at home.

If the AP is set to factory defaults (i.e. no country setting or security applied) I connect fine and link to my home LAN DSLRouter (LinksysBEFSR81) and to the ADSL modem (DLink DSL-300G+) out to the Internet. The AP obviously gets the connection through properly to the router which as DHCP supplies an IP address for the laptop in the corect range (192.168.1.100+)

The problem occurs as soon as any configuration communication occurs with the AP (i.e. to change the channel or SSID or apply Security). The laptop (I have tried with other Apple laptops with same result) will still connect fine with the AP (various security options with passwords seem to work WEP and WPA) but for some reason the Apple then reports it has a 'self-defined' IP address (range 169.254.52...) and cannot access the LAN beyond the AP. It appears the rules have changed on the AP as soon as any config changes are made (using the standard 3Com browser access version 1.03.12) and no longer successfully either (a) convinces the router to issue a suitable IP address for the laptop or (b) doesnt even try for some reason. All through this process the AP is still accessable over the LAN using the IP in the range 192.168.1.100+ assigned by the router??

Anybody got any ideas please??
