OK, here is a weird one. Today I had to replace one of my Cisco switches (3900 XL) because it tanked on me. In management's infinite wisdom, they started buying 3coms recently. Not that 3coms are bad, I am just not that familar with them. Anyways, I put in a 3com 4400 in it's place, and brought it up. Now, this switch connects over to a 4003 with Layer 3. After a bit of trial and error, I got everything connected, but with one small problem. On the 3com, the port says that is wants to be 100 half. I tried to set it to full, but it just ignored me. So, I turned off AutoNegotiation, and the link went down. Turn it on, and the link comes back up. Here is the weird part. The Cisco is convinced that it is talking 100 full, which is what I want it to be.... Anyone have any ideas?

In the release notes for version 3 of the code a similar scenario is mentioned see for reference abd the section enhancement and fixes for known faults.

Other recommendations would be disable the port smartautosense and ensure the port capabilities is set to 100full.

Both 3Com and Cisco use NWAY 802.1z as the standard autonegotiation process. There should be no problems and I have never encountered any, 3Com have included such capabilities as smartautosense to make it easier for customers as with 2 such enabled switches a crossed cable is no longer necessary to connect them. This is proprietary however so will not work with a cisco.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I am currently running the 2.20 software, so I will upgrade when I get a chance. Also, I was thinking the autosense might have something to do with it, but isn't that a setting for the whole switch, not just for a single port?
