3com 3CRWE454G72 wireless AP trouble

Hi,
I'm having trouble trying to get a second wireless access point (both the same model and firmware) working together. I want to bounce my signal so does one have to be set as a access point and the second as an repeter or both in repeter mode? both on the same channels and the same SSID? Or can this not be done with this older type of access point?

According to 3 com it is backward compatible no mention of repeating mode for this unit... also DISCONTINUED....

On devices that offer this facility, the first Access Point is usually put into normal AP mode, and the second one "bouncing" the signal would be put in Repeater mode.
