3Com 3848 Switch Help

I have several 3Com 3848 switches that are supposed to be IEEE 802.1Q complaint. I am trying to create eight(8) vlans on one switch. I have assigned groups of six(6) ports to each of the vlans; ie - ports 1-6 are vlan 1, 7-12 are vlan 2, 13-18 are vlan 3, 19-24 are vlan 4, 25-30 are vlan 5, 31-36 are vlan 6, 37-42 are vlan 7 and 43-48 are vlan 8.

I can only get four(4) vlans to work; vlan 1 thru 4. Vlan 5 thru 8 do not work.

Is there a limitation on vlans and port blocks? Since vlan 1 and 5 are on the same block of ports must they all be the same vlan?

Is there a limit to the number of vlans?

Anyone have any suggestions?
 
The only limitation is the switch (itself) can handle 255 individual VLANS. You can define up to 4096 VLANs but the switch will only be aware of 255 of them.

Sorry to quote the manual, bottom of page 62.

When setting up VLANs you need to understand when to use untagged and tagged membership of VLANs. Quite simply, if a port is in a single VLAN it can be an untagged member, but if the port needs to be a member of multiple VLANs, tagged membership must be defined. Typically endstations (for example, clients) will be untagged members of one VLAN, while inter-switch connections will be tagged members of all VLANs.

How are your ports defined in the VLAN? Tagged or untagged.
