Hi

My webserver (running server 2003 web edition SP") for the past three days has shut down in
the middle of the night.

The event viewer shows:

loads of information messages and one error the detailed informations is below.

As the server is remote to my location and is unmanaged I'd like to try to sort
this myself before using the onsite techies at £150 per hour

Any advise would be helpfull

thanks

Ian

What's the event ID and Source?

Is the shutdown time the same every night in the event logs? If so you need to start by looking for a sheduled task that is running at that time.

Hi

I got this from the error log

Date 18/10/2007 Source System.servicemodel.ins
time 05.03.22
category None
Type error
event id 0

Any help?

thanks

Ian

First you need to establish as to whether the reboots are system initiated. Look for "The previous system shutdown was unexpected" or eventids 6008/6009
Look at the events preceeding these events in both the system and application log

Hi

I do not seem to have any 6008 0r 6009 event ids in the logs. I've cleared them and I'll watch overnight.

What I have noticed is a lot of warnings and a couple of errors as below all about the time the system appears to turn off.
Perhaps this has something to d with it?

thanks

Ian

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0: x86 (KB928416).

Does the machine reboot after shutdown? If it does, I would say that the machine is rebooting after a failed installation of .NET 3.0. What time is set for installing updates?

I think I may have discovered your issue. 3:00am is the default time for Automatic updates to install and reboot your server. You have an error indicating that it tried to install .Net framework 3.0.. Look for messages in the application event log referring to Windows Update Agent...
I suspect you have a similar issue as myself (I have a thread regarding this if you look at the list)
Please take a look and get back to me, I have an open ticket with MS regarding this

Hi

Thanks for that I beleive you have "cracked it" GOing through the logs I realised that my times were taken from the logs which are not the time that anything happens. However reverse logic indicated that
The system was displayingmessages up till 2.55am and then nothing till I remotely started the system when I got up about 8am.

Your hint showed me that my updates are indeed scheduled for 4am so that seems to be the problem.

Next issue is that the company I seem unable to change the update time as it's greyout yet I am an administrator.

Weird, either way we progress, many thanks

Ian

Ian in order to get a better grasp of this possibly major issue, can you provide me the base config details for your server;
I myself experienced the issue on Windows 2003 Standard x64 that is in workgroup mode
Anything that you can add might help the cause.

Regards

Terry

No problem

The server is an itel celeron 2.4 with 512 mb ram which I hire from fasthosts, It's set to do updates automatically

and the update that appears to be causing the problem is. net framework kp928416 which has failed to install

many times.

cheers
