Just to be COMPLETELY sure of the basic 3640 hardware configuration, is it OK to place a NM 1FE-1CT1 in slot0? My other option is a 1E2W.

My understanding is that I need to access the router via either the console or, if via SDM, the ethernet port in slot0.

Once set up, I would like the 1FE as the LAN adapter and 1E as the WAN adapter.

TIA,

Bill

Never mind. Found the info I needed in the 3600 Series Quick Start Guide. It appears that SDM is the preferred set-up tool for 3640s with later versions of IOS.

You wil probably eventually use a serial port as your WAN connection but the FE will definitely be utilized for the LAN as you will be setting up a router on a stick pretty soon!

Yeah, probably. What do you suggest?

I've got a couple of modules I haven't installed. The FE is actually a 1FE-1CT1. I also got a WIC-1T that can be loaded into one of the 1E2W modules. I don't see any reason to load the BRI 8B-U.

Because.. There is no reason NOT to! LoL

Wrong-o, Billy---there is a reason not to, actually---that would leave room for his WIC-1ADSL, which is 1/2 the reason he got it...I think the WIC-1ADSL can go in the NM 1FE-1CT1...did you get the list of supported modules, Bill?
When I say Billy, I mean maczen...when I say Bill, that's silverhairb. When I say King, well...that would be me...
Watch it, Billy---my ears are burning, and I can read your thoughts!lol

Greetings and Salutations King Timothy of Etherland,

According to the WIC-1ADSL isn't supported on the 1FE1CT1. I also found some info on the Cisco.com site confirming that info, but can't find it right now. The WIC-1ADSL is supported on the 1FE1R2W which is not TOO costly on eBay.

I still can't figure out why I should put in a card with 8 ISDN ports. Or even a second 1E2W if I'm only using 1 x 1FE1CT1 and 1 x 1E2W. At least for now.

Bill,

You said - "I still can't figure out why I should put in a card with 8 ISDN ports. Or even a second 1E2W if I'm only using 1 x 1FE1CT1 and 1 x 1E2W. At least for now." the only reason you would is because you can and you might want to see what the router shows you when you run a "show version", "show run" or "show interface" etc.

We learn by doing and seeing :)

OK, understand. Thanks.

At this point, I'm still trying to get a solid working config so I'm eliminating as many variables as possible.

Bill,

That is understandable and you are VERY SMART to do it that way - KISS - KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID, I learned that along time ago and it makes sense.

Once you have it running as you want or you have a 2nd or 3rd 3600 - then you will have additional Network modules to play with or learn from!!

I'm working on getting a few more. But I'm not in a hurry. Just waiting for the right deal on the right platforms and some more modules. And its not like I'm sitting on my hands. There's plenty to do with what I already have.

I do have the long-term focus of using the equipment in a "production" mode whether its in my home or an environment I would be supporting.

Also working on that short paper. So far, its a stream of consciousness that needs better organization and trimming from 15 pages down to 3 or 4 more easily "digestible" pages. (Sorry for that REALLY SICK MD5 pun. Not.)

Burt,

Quick question?
"Wrong-o, Billy---there is a reason not to, actually---that would leave room for his WIC-1ADSL, which is 1/2 the reason he got it...I think the WIC-1ADSL can go in the NM 1FE-1CT1...did you get the list of supported modules, Bill?

He has four NM slots and one NM in it! That leaves three open! If he adds the NM-8B-U (Just to play with) then how does that adversely affect him adding the WIC-1ADSL?

Bill,
Scott Morris used that exact phrase regarding some of my posts over at another forum the other day!

"stream of consciousness"

This has absolutely zero relevance regarding the topic at hand (nothing new for my posts) nor does it contribute to this forum in any way but I did feel the need to share as a deja vu means someone has changed something in the system!

Actually, there are two slots in use, one for a 1E2W and the other for a 1FE1CT1. Neither of these will support a WIC-1ADSL. If/when the decision is made to get a WIC-1ADSL, I'll get a 1FE2W or 1FE1R2W, either of which will support a WIC-1ADSL. That will also free up the two existing NMs currently being used for ethernet access for use in an empty 3620 or 3640. (Always thinking ahead.)

[the other] Bill

Always been afraid to post a stream of consciousness message. Mine tend to get way too detailed and boring after about the third line. :) Sure cure for insomnia.

LoL..

Ok.. so you have an NM-1E2W, a NM-8B-U, and an NM-1FE1CT1. You buy an NM-1FE2W or an NM-1FE1R2W to support your WIC-1ADSL. That just fills up your router further eluding to my point that there is no reason not to.. LoL You will inevitably buy another 3640 and have four more slots to fill not to mention more WIC slots when you start filling the NM's. ISDN BRI WIC cards are inexpensive nowadays.. Just another toy! I have both ISDN as well as ATM in my lab. Neither are CCNA or even CCNP anymore to my knowledge but the ISDN and ATM are still CCIE topics.. Either way, half of the stuff that I play with are just to learn or at least be introduced to the subject.. That way I can decide for myself that I hate it! LoL (ISDN.. ATM is actually kind of cool)

Billy,

ISDN and ATM are off the CCIE Route & Switch blueprint, which is the cert most go for. May still be on CCIE Service Provider, but not sure.

Thanks Clue! I love having this guy around.. I tell people all the time.. "Get a Clue!"! LoL
