I am trying to install an ibm 3583 ultrium tape library onto an RS6000 model H70
I have cabled up the drive as per manual, but after a reboot or running cfgmgr, I can only see a drive called ‘SMC0’ which is the tape medium changer.

The 3583 has two 3580’s installed, so I would expect to see rmt1 and rmt2 defined, but I have tried deleting all drives (inc existing rmt0 dat drive) but it doesn’t make any difference.

The driver and os are at the required levels. I have tried installing it onto 2 other different machines, both H70’s but get the same result.

I have searched the I cannot find any previous encounters with this problem.

Has any one encountered this problem before?

My guess is that you have the library configured as a "robot" or something like that. This would be configured in the setup menu on the drive itself.

What this does is only show the autoloader robot to the AIX system. This would be the correct setup if you are running Tivoli or some other tape management package. The tape drives are now handled by the autoloader. I had the same problem with the 7337 library.

Change the setup to something else (I think "sequential" - or something like that) in the library it self, delete the devices on that SCSI adapter, then re-run cfgmgr on that scsi adapter.

Regards, Bill.
