3550 takes long to aquire address on xp 1

I found the fix for this in this forum before but cant find it now.

The problem- there is a long wait time (about one minute) to establish an ip address when I enable any nic connected to the 3550.

Please help again! thanks everyone.
 
maybe if you enable fastport on the your switch that might help.
 
As previous poster says enable portfast on the port in question. Spanning tree will block the port from sending/receiving traffic for 50 seconds otherwise.
 
To explain:-

Spanning tree goes through different states when allowing and blocking ports, as follows:-

blocking
listening
learning
forwarding

These states take a period of time to initiate and move to the next stage..... portfast basically moves straight from blocking to forwarding.

Some programs require speed to oeprate and that is why Portfast should be enabled. A good example would be the PXE linux loader.
