Hi All,

Do I need to do anything special when I plug an ethernet cable from a Transition Networks media converter to a port on a 3548XL? The other end of the fiber will be connected to a 2924XL using the same type of media converter.

Also, do I need to enter the spanning tree command 48 times, once per port!

At this point, I've just done the basic config steps when you first fire it up. I have it hooked to a little 8 port router at my desk that is connected to my LAN with a straight thru. I also have a workstation connected to the 3548XL and it can get out to the Internet so it must be working.

I have 6 of the 2900 series switches, but this is my first 3500 series.. I haven't had to deploy a 2900 in a couple of years so i'm rusty, but am sure I had to do the spanning tree command on each port for them. Also, I don't remember them being autosense for port speeds.

Thanks In Advance

No you don't have to do any spanning tree commands except on user ports add spanning tree portfast . Unfortunetly these old switches do not do the interface range command so yes if you have to add commands to all the ports its one at a time . You don't have this issue on new IOS switches . Those were one of cisco first switches back in the mid 90's and are long out of support at this point.

hi vipergg,

THAT WAS BRUTAL! Thanks for the info and thank goodness for the up arrow command repeat thingy.

As a quick follow up, when I enter the 'spanning-tree portfast' command on each interface I get the admonishment:

%Warning: portfast enabled on FastEthernet0/44.
Usually portfast should be enabled on ports connected to a single host. When portfast is enabled, connecting hubs, concentrators, switches, bridges, etc. to this interface may cause temporary spanning tree loops. Use with CAUTION.

the port configuration after the command looks like:
interface FastEthernet0/44
spanning-tree portfast

I sometimes wind up having to put in a little unmanaged linksys 5-port workgroup switch at a station for various reasons. Would I need to take that command off that port if I did so?

Thanks Again!

Yes I would take it off and let it runn thru normal spanning tree if you use standalone hubs or switches off the 3500.
