Over the past week or 2 I have been getting the following return messages from the mailer deamon:

--- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----
<someone@someaddress.com>
(reason: 354 Enter mail, end with "." on a line by itself)

----- Transcript of session follows -----
554 5.5.0 Remote protocol error
Reporting-MTA: dns; my.domain.com
Received-From-MTA: dns; user_pc
Arrival-Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2003 17:21:56 -0400 (EDT)

I am thinking it could be from a network (router) change that has recently been changed but what I am looking for is how to fix it though sendmail if possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This error is not from one specific user it is from all users and not at any specific time of day.

Thanks in advance!

No command line operations for email only end user (Windows) software. Our Unix box is used to only send, receive, and house mail until retrieved. This is not happening to one user it is happening to all users (randomly). Nothing has changed on the end users side for sending and receiving mail nor on the Unix box. The Sendmail config has not changed in who knows how long except for updates and an update had not been performed for several weeks before this started happening.

Any sugestions!

Did you ever find a solution to this? I'm having the exact same problem. It's difficult to find an answer on this one!

The "." on a line by itself is used to mark the end of the message. This is a clue to the problem. The receiving MTA is being a little too strict here.
There is a rule in ruleset 0 where the right hand side is:
$# mailer $: user
But sendmail is expecting
$# mailer $@ no host $: user
The problem appears to be that ruleset zero is returning without resolving to a $#.... at all.

So if you see this error the problem is usually on the other end, not yours.
