I connected an old 3494 Tape Library to an old F50 server running AIX 4.3.3. Does anyone know how of any method of controlling the tape library or what driver is needed (*ldd* I believe) without having to install TSM?

What I want to do is load a tape and then read the contents of the tape and maybe even save the contents to disk, but I don't want to have to load TSM, as I said, to do this. Can it be done?

Thanks.

Hmmm....Very interesting.

What kind of drives do you have in there?

What does "lsdev -Cc" tape give you?

With a 3494 library you can play with the cleaning cartridges with the console...

I am curious too :)

They are 3490 drives and lsdev only shows rmt0. I was going to load a tape from the console of the tape library, but need a way to manipulate what is on the cartridge from the AIX side. I don't want to install TSM and everything because this is for some lab testing for something that may not even work, so I don't want to go to a lot of work.

Hi kHz,

Think you might be after the mtlib command.

Cant recall if its part of the atldd.driver set, or the Atape.driver set.

One of the two I'm sure. ;-)

All the Best.

You can test the gripper and even drives by the console. But I still think you need software like TSM or NetBackup.

Good luck bud

you need acl auto tape loader installed) the you can use sysback or even atape for tape movement

plamb, how do I control the tape library with sysback or atape? When I tried sysback it won't let me do anything with the tape library even though it is seen as rmt1 and is correctly identified.

you need to load Automatic Cartridge Loader (ACL) software

Is that to be installed on the AIX host, I presume? Do you know from where it is available?

Thanks.

On a 3590 drive with ACF, I used tapeutil program in AIX433 to mount/dismount cartridges (data/cleaning) Needs IBM Atape device driver I guess (may even be part of the same fileset). Don't know if that is still available. May not even be compatible with 3490 drives.

tapeutil is menu driven but if I'm not mistaken, you could specify complete tape manipulation commands from aix prompt.
