I'm looking to replace the aging Panasonic KX-TD1232 PBX in our accounting office with something a bit more modern (read: not from the 1980s). I looked at Asterisk, but one key feature is SLA across all of the phones in the office and Asterisk can't (easily) do that.

The office building has six offices plus a copy room, reception, pantry, conference room, and the server room. So I'm looking at 11-12 extensions - looking at either 5324 or 5340 for each. Trunks will be 6x plain POTS trunks (I am pushing for SIP but they like the reliability of POTS.)

What I am looking to make sure of (the reason for this post) is that the 3300 can do what I want/need it to do. I've only briefly used a 3300 - I work with a few SX-200 ELs on a daily basis. Questions below.
-Is the same LDN functionality on the 3300 as is the SX-200? (Shared line appearance on multiple extensions - one can put on hold and be picked up by another - can press line appearance button to dial out on that trunk)
-Is direct paging available? I know I wasn't able to get this to work on LW17 but did on LW19 on the SX-200. Instead of ringing, the people in the office sometimes like to hit the person's button and just page their set.
-As for BLF, on the SX-200 it's just a solid lamp whether the extension is off-hook, ringing, or on-call. Is that the same on the 3300 or does it actually blink?
-Can you pick up a call (directed pickup) by hitting the blinking (or solid) BLF button

Those are all of the questions that I can think of at the moment feature-wise. As for the licensing, what comes stock on the 3300 CXi? Will I be able to do what I listed above with stock licenses or will I need something special? I'm not opposed to purchasing licenses in the slightest as I have an existing relationship with a Mitel dealer for the SX-200 and he is 3300 certified. That's not an issue.
Again, I've only used the SX-200 before the days of feature levels and such, so I really am not sure how that works on the newer ones.

Thanks!

Yes to all

You'll be happy with the 3300.

The basic software will come with 16 IP extensions, 4 analog extensions, 6 POTS lines. If not wrong I thinks you also get a couple of voicemail licenses. I would suggest you select the 5340e, html screen very nice.

Yes and No, make sure you buy standard licensing and not the UCC license bundle that allows Multi-device Licensing.
Multi-Device Licensing is great and allows you to use many devices under 1 license. What it does not let you do is have multiple appearances with hold and answer on another set.

Yes, in a couple of ways. Until Rel 9.0 , the target extension needed to have their mic engaged to allow handsfree answer back. Then Mitel added a feature for "Direct Voice Call allows a caller to establish a two-way handsfree call at the called party set whether or not Handsfree Answerback or Auto-Answer is enabled"

-As for BLF, on the SX-200 it's just a solid lamp whether the extension is off-hook, ringing, or on-call. Is that the same on the 3300 or does it actually blink?
Code:
RED Green

Off On Idle Hotdesk User - Logged in (requires COS option)
On -- Busy
50% on 50% off -- Ringing
20% on 80% off -- DND
Flickering -- Forwarded
438 mS OFF, 62 mS ON -- Hotdesk user logged out

-Can you pick up a call (directed pickup) by hitting the blinking (or solid) BLF button
3 Primary functions
Pickup ringing (can also be set to ring simultaneously)

What's most important is that you realise ... There is no spoon.

I went hunting and found a great deal on a CXi on a popular website that I shall not mention. I had a spare 5324 laying around too, so I bit the bullet and bought the system. It came in today, and I am having a few issues.
First, it appears that I am licensed for less than the standard licensing mentioned above. Is that normal?
Code:
IP User Licenses: 11
  ACD Agent Licenses: 0
  IP Device Licenses: 11
  Mailbox Licenses: 21
  Digital Link Licenses: 0
  Compression Licenses: 0
  SIP Trunk Licenses: 0
  Analog Line Licenses: 0
  SIP User Licenses: 0
  XNET Networking: No
  IP Networking: Yes
  Voice Mail Networking: No
  Advanced Voice Mail: No
  Voice Mail Hospitality/PMS: No
  Tenanting: No
  MLPP: No
  Remote Management: No
Second, I appear to be running a very old version of the 3300 software. If I found the right number, I'm on 8.0.7.16. Should I be concerned or just leave it alone?

Third, I have the previous owner's configuration still, sans passwords. How can I nuke the current config and start over.

Fourth, I am having issues with the DHCP server. I have the CXi connected to my existing LAN through its WAN port. My laptop goes into the CXi's LAN 1G port. The 5324 is in Port 1 of the 16 port switch. I have enabled the DHCP server in the web interface with the default 192.168.1.x subnet. Nothing is getting IP addresses, though.

I have a few more questions, but I'd rather get the basics working first before getting technical with the configuration.

Update - once I set the IP address for the Layer 2 switch, the DHCP server came alive and my 5324 did too.
Before I go much deeper, any tips on nuking the old install or should I just delete it all manually?

You are aware that legally speaking, you only own the system nOT the licences? You won't be able to upgrade the software unless you can find the previous owner and get their licence swapped to you via Mitel and even then you can only buy licences through Mitel unless you happen to be a Mitel reseller....You can reset the passwords through the console (do a search on here for the commands). The config depends a lot on how cloae the existing one is and how happy you are on setting it up again....and you won't be able to purchase any more licences.
Standard licewnceing was for 8 IP/user and 8 mailboxes

@wireman50 I did get the feeling that I didn't own the licenses, but I did not know that I would have to find the previous owner. I do have an existing relationship with a local Mitel reseller who would be more than happy to help me with purchasing the needed licenses. I've already reset the passwords and nuked most of the previous owner's configurations and moved in with my own.
Is there any way around contacting the previous owner even if I bought all new licensing?
--Non-Licensing Related--

I'm waiting on my 5340 to arrive, but I have a 5324 and an analog set hooked up right now and they are working swimmingly. I do need some clarification, though.

[aside]I know the 3300 isn't intended to be used as a key system, but for the (soon to be) users of this PBX, they have used a key system for the last 30 years, and don't particularly like change.[/aside]

1. I will be hooking up eight PSTN lines (six on one card, two on the second) the LS/GS ports on the back of the CXi for inbound/outbound calling. On the SX-200, I would just route the trunk to a LDN that was shared across the phones with In/Out granted, with ringing enabled only on 100. On the 3300, would I do a Single Line to an LDN for each line, and then on the other phones do Key System to the same LDN? Or would I do Key System for all of them or something else? [I'm beginning to notice that there's a HUGE learning curve between the two systems.
1a. At another site that had a 3300 that I worked at briefly (MXe instead of CXi) they had configured the sets to where if you pressed the button for the respective trunk on the phones, you would get directly connected to that trunk instead of dialing on your phone and the 3300 sending out the digits. When calling in, the trunk button would flash and the phone would ring as expected. That's really what I want, except I'd prefer to have only the reception ring.

2. For direct paging, I intend on having a key for Direct Page where the users would then press the button for the user (programmed as DSS/BLF) they would like to page. Is that the proper flow or would they have to dial the extension manually after pressing the direct page key?

3. I noticed with the Key System / Single Line functions that if a call comes in on that LDN, the caller's name/extension is shown on the display even when No Ring is selected. Is there a way around that? I would only want this behavior to happen on the Reception extension, the others I would want the button to flash but no ringing or display.

4. As long as I specify the same options that the CXi's DHCP server does, I should be fine using an external DHCP server, right?

5. For one of the PSTN lines, the last four digits of the number are 0777. I intended to use the last four digits of each phone number as the LDN for simplicity's sake. This is causing a delay when dialing just 0 (trying to get the operator) because it's waiting to see if it will get 777 or just leave the 0. Should I just change it to 1777 or 9777 or is there a better way?

6. The previous owner had calls redirected to an IVR/Auto Attendant after X rings. That's fine as I want the same thing. I can't figure out how to change the recording, though. When I dial the pilot number (1060), I get sent to VM which plays the auto attendant greeting. Where do I change that, and the respective options?

That's all I can think of right now, will be back with more questions later.

Since Mitel considers the system you purchased to be "grey market" the only way to get it properly licensed is to ask your dealer to sell you the Mitel MiVoice Business Standalone SW for 3300 bundle and a new SYSID I button. The bundle comes with 16 IP licenses, one digital link license and no voicemail box licenses. The dealer will need to add the number of voicemail licenses that you will require. This will give you the latest version of the 3300 software (MCD 6.0) and make your system "legal". This will also allow you to use all the current Mitel IP gigabit IP phones which aren't supported on Rel 8.0. After installing MCD 6.0 the system will default to a blank database. (It wouldn't make sense to try and upgrade your database from Rel 8.0 to MCD 6.0, too many costly steps to go through.) Good luck.

@SXWizard I found this list of licensing, and I went through and I think I narrowed down what I need, but of course I will be going to my dealer for the final list.
sku name qty
54004971 MCD Standalone PBX Software *1
50004920 3300 CX/CXi/AX/MXe I-BUTTON FRU *1
54000922 Voicemail Box License (Qty 4) *4
54000929 2nd Port on IP Phones License *1
54002701 MCD ONS license *2

Does that look about right or should I just leave it alone and let my dealer spec it out? I couldn't find any LS/GS trunk licensing on that sheet.

I'm no sales guru but I would look at the Small Business Pack II 54005762 (This will give you 16 users with 16 voicemail licenses + Digital Link + 2 SIP Trunks) and is cheaper than the Standalone SW (I could never understand why, I'm not sure if there are restrictions on how far you can expand?)
ONS licenses aren't needed to use the analogue main boards ports. LS/GS Trunks are not licensed, they are hardware only (Again you have 6 to use on the analogue main board).

@sarond I didn't see that listed on any of the price sheets I found, but that sounds like exactly what I want/need. It does not include, though, the PC port on the phones or the iButton, right? I'd still need to get those separately.

As for expansion, we have no plans to expand. We may move out of this office and into our secondary office at some point, which is even smaller. The physical office building can't hold any more people. On a daily basis, there are maybe four people working there. Just a lot of empty offices. To think back in the 80s and 90s we have 15 or 30 people in the office at the same time - boy how computers have downsized accounting firms.

You will still need the i-button and make sure you have 512 meg memory otherwise you can't go to MCD6 (look in hardware compute cards form and see if it says 536870912; if its smaller than this you will need a memory upgrade as well)

The second port on the phones is not separately licensed; they work on any licensed phone.(I can't find the part number either so its not available as far as I can see).

Maybe just a package available in Australia? I'm not sure of other places around the world.
I know there have been some good packages to encourage the 3300 in the smaller businesses here, that may change now that the 5000 is available.

As for the memory issue, I'm at 256. Is it standard ram like you would buy for a computer or is it proprietary?

Whip the top off and see but I would suggest that finding a 512 stick of suitable memory may be a bit of a quandary unless anyone knows any different. never done the upgrade cos most of these units, whilst quite reliable, cost a fortune to upgrade and have been running for quite a few years and you never know. The cost for customers is mainly time getting the kit from 8 to 9 then to 4 (and then doing the share thing to get the datatbase suitable for 5> ) and then up to the latest. 4-5 hours work at the very least. So customers tend to baulk at the cost for what they see as very little return. Its very nearly as cheap just to roll out a new controller.....IMHO

Part numbers 54000922 & 54000929 are for a SX200 ICP not a 3300. For the voicemail ports you need 54000297 x 16 and if you don't have an ASU II you don't need the ONS licenses. The embedded ONS ports don't need a license. The PN for the 512 M RAM is 50005883.
