If I change from 300dpi to 72dpi to 300dpi, without clicking 'resampling", will that affect my printed image at 300dpi? I went down to 72dpi while using filters do to memory problems, (too slow).
Thanks.

Yes it should - unless you're reducing the physical print size of the image to about 1/4 the original.

Generally it's best to save an original of a PS doc and work off a copy so you don't lose anything. Same goes for most image apps.

Forgot something.

You might try upping the resolution to 600-900 dpi and hope that PS interpolation fills in any weak spots.

There is no point in going back to 300 after you trash your image at 72 ppi... unless you like a mushy mess.

Hi Kentucky

Something is amiss here. If you don't RESAMPLE your image it won't change FILE size - it WILL change the physical size (dimensions) - therefore you won't save any time applying filters. All you will do is adjust the 'intended' size and a much bigger preview will be generated.

For example:
An RGB image, 300 dpi resolution, 300 pixels square
... this will generate a preview at 1 square inch and is 263.7k in sizee

if you change to 72 dpi - without resampling the image - this will happen:-
the picture will now be 4.167 inches square but it is still 300 pixels square - and is still 263.7k

Kind Regards

[sorry - I skipped past the word 'resampling']

...and this tweaking to the dimensions, without resampling, and while maintaining the same pixel count, should have no effect on the processing requirements to use filters. It will not speed anything up.

You are simply wasting your own time by tweaking this.

You could set up an 'action' (record your edits) on a lower rez image, then apply that action to your larger artwork. This will only work with image filters applied to the whole canvas, selections/text/etc won't translate up.
