I have 2 users who receive a "login incorrect" error when they try to login. I did a remote login to both of their machines and when I try to do a "su - user" command, I get the "3004-500 User does not exist" error message.

None of the other users have got this error, and the other strange thing is that they sit right next to each other, and there is a third user in their area who does not get this error.

Do the usernames exist in /etc/passwd?
if not are you using ldap?
Are they mixed case usernames?

If all else fails set them up again.

Or maybe you have an NIS setup and their client is not connected proberly!

hi,
NIS sometimes had some problems of synchronizzation,
but if you log in in another workstation with the NIS user.
But probably you are logging in the same server, and you don't use NIS: if you have NIS, tell us.

In AIX, users are declared in /etc/passwd (as all Unix), but
here they are also in /etc/security/passwd (the passwords are here). For some reasons, users can miss in this 2nd file (cat them):
in this case, using smit, delete and remake them.

Thanks for all the help. In the end I had to recreate them, which took a while, but now they can work.

hi,
look in /etc/passwd and or /etc/security/passwd and
note the id of the user, and when you recreate them,
set the id = the old.
(so the files remain of the same users); if they do not exists in passwd files (strange), take the ids from the
.profile in their home directory.
bye
