On my motherboard I have a 4 pin connection for the CPU fan power. However, the Zalman heatsink has a 3 pin connection for the fan power to the motherboard. How would I run an adapter from a 3 pin female connection to a 4 pin female connection so the motherboard recognizes the cpu fan is plugged in?

The MB will be able to power up the CPU fan and sense its speed with its 3 pin connector installed on the MB's 4 pin terminal.
The 4th pin allows the MB to control the fan's speed. But the fan needs an integral 4 pin connector to take advantage of this feature. Since your fan has only 3 pins, then it will always run at full speed.
