OK, now I'm really confused...
When I run the Windows GUI version of Check Disk, it scans my drive and doesn't find any problems.
When I run CHKDSK c: /V from the command prompt, it finds "minor inconsistencies -- This is not corruption".
When I run CHKDSK c: /P /R from the Recovery Console, it finds problems and claims to have fixed them.

Which one is right? [ponder]

All of them. Different switches for different purposes. In your case you should run chkdsk /r from RC until no problems found.

But the /V (verbose) switch should only affect how much detail is printed to the screen, not what is scanned.

Even when I run CHKDSK c: /P /R from the Recovery Console until no more errors are reported, as soon as I boot into windows and run CHKDSK c: /V it finds more problems.

Are there 3rd party Check Disk programs (free maybe?) that would work better, and are they safe?
