3.6 to v4.0 upgrade issues

We have inherited a BCM400 running 3.6 software which the customer wanted to upgrade to v4.0
Ran the pre-upgrade check tool, and it indicated 2 issues, one was the cdr records exceeding 200mb which has now been sorted, the other was that the system name had an 'underscore' in the name, also been sorted.

When we tried to perform the upgrade, it went through the stages for configuring FTP server, and whilst performing the System Health check, it appeared to take an eternity before responding back with a Time out error.

This was initially done via LAN2 as the system was on the customers network. Then we tried on LAN1 and received the same time out error.

The only thing we did not check was the BFT.

Does anyone think that the BFT may be at fault here?

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Cheers

No I have never seen that as a problem. I usually put the Program on my PC instead of using the CD and I have also run Continuous Pinging to the LAN to get it to work.

Which LAN is the Published IP, thats the one you need to use.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

LAN1 is the published IP address.

On other systems I have upgraded, I have run the upgrade from LAN2 and never had any problems. This is the first one I have had issues with.

I do a continuois ping to get the BCM's attention and then start the upgread and then if it get past that bad spot I cancel the Ping.

I had it time out but with out exiting I started it again then it took. It upgraded without any problems.

I've had similar problems. Usually cleared after loading cumulative 3.6 patches before the upgrade which would solve the issues.

s we have just inherited this, it appears that since installation, they have had no maintenance on the system at all. That is another reason why I thought it may be the BFT>

You could look at the BFT to see if the CAPS are Blue or Green.

Green = BAD

Blue = GOOD

Thanks Ace,

THis is the only thing we did not do when on site on Saturday. Engineer is attending tomorrow to check the caps. Has to be out of normal working hours as they are running a call centre.

Will let you know how it goes.

Engineer back on site, the caps are Blue, no bulging.

Connected to LAN2, inserted upgrade CD into laptop and the process started, went through configuring ftp server, uploaded files to BCM. Display shows 'performing system healthcheck' sits on this for 25 minutes, then we get an error message stating Timeout waiting for BCM....
Tried on LAN1, does not even get to configuring FTP server. Tried on a PC connected to the customer network, getting same response back as for LAN1.

As I stated earlier, system is patched up to date, it is 3.6 r2.2, and running the correct upgrade CD.

At a loss now

Found the problem, the Disc 1 of the upgrade pack was faulty. Tried to follow Acewarlocks procedure of copying to laptop, but it would not copy files due to CRC errors.

Went back to site with another set of cd's, still having same issues.

We have now changed the BFT, re-imaged a HDD, ensured patches are up to date. Upgrade discs still time out.

Tried Lan1, Lan2, PC on customer network, also tried copying cd's to pc to run upgrade.

We get to performing system health check and that it as far as it goes.

If no-one can shed any light, it looks like a call to ITAS will have to be made.

Thanks in advance

Have you tryed when it states it timed out to not exit just start it again. Do you have the latest upgrade discs. There was a problem of timing out, so Nortel extented the timers. I had just what you have try doing what I tryed above,it worked for me.

There is a file called "cleanevents.exe" that you can run that will clean out any garbage that might be preventing the upgrade from running. Do a search on the hard drive (the F: partition if I remember correctly) and you should be able to find it. Otherwise, if you can find the file on another system, you can FTP it to the BCM and run it that way. Running cleanevents will resolve the problem about 50% of the time. The other 50% requires a call to Nortel India to do battle with support.
