Hi,

Can you please help. I'm running SQL 2000 Standard on a Windows 2000 Advanced Server. Now I would like to install a 2nd instance of SQL 2000. Can you please tell me how to do this.

Thank you,

Tony

I use the Enterprise version, but all you need to do is run install from the disk. It will recognize that an instance already exists and prompt you for a name for the new instance.

Standard SQL Edition will respond the same way in the installer. For standard you will need to purchase additional licenses however.

I have similar problem ... I am trying to add a 2nd instance

i right-clicked on the default

1. SQL Server Group
2. New SQL Server Registration

then tried to use the SQL Server Wizard to create a New INSTANCE. However it did NOT work although it created a new "ICON" (no green light!) for the new instance. I got a
Connection failed ... check SQL Server properties.

I thought this was the way to add a new instance. Is that so?

We have 2 web separate sites that both use SQL Server rather heavily ... and have backup jos ..etc ... and recently we had to both web sites on a single box.

I preferred a separate instance since we are 2 different IT groups .. and it will be better not to step on each other's toes!

Also is there an advantage in having a 2nd instance ... instead of creating say a 2nd User database and adding to the default instance. We already have a User database for one web site.

OK, did you install a new instance on the machine, or just walk through the wizzard to get to the second instance?

To install a second instance of SQL Server on a server you need to run through the installer again and completly install a second installation of SQL Server on the machine.

A second instance is totaly seperate from the first instance. The databases can't be joined together without creating a link between the servers. Normally the reason to create a second instance would be for to have a development instance when you only have a single server to install SQL Server on.

In your case I would say that a single instance is probably better. It uses less memory and CPU power than two instances, and is easier to manage.

Installing and Registering are two different things. You can not install a new instance from Enterprise Manager, it has to be done from the install disk. Then you register it in EM.
