Hello,
I'm new to this site and require assistance to install a second Harddrive, not to increase HD capacity but to transfer Data to my newer PC. The old HD came out of my old PC which is no longer functional otherwise I could just use a memory stick to transfer the data.
Also, I transferred my CD Burner to my new PC and now, when I first start up the PC, the Burner is showing on the display as the HDD. shows up in Windows Explorer as E but isn't recognised when I what to burn a Disc, notice says install Disc even when one is inserted in the burner.
So, not being a expert in PC Surgery, where did I go wrong with the Burner and what do I have to do to install the 2nd HD?
Data which may help;
MB is an Asus P2B-S
BIOS Award Modular 03/03/00
HD which I want to install is a Seagate Model ST 38429A 8,5GB
a second one which I also want to transfer Data from is a IBM Model DHEA-36480E182115 HG 6.4 GB
Running 2 CD Roms, 1 normal, 1 Burner + Floppy Drive
Sound Blaster Sound Card & Matox? Graphic Card
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanking all you PC Doc's in advance for your assistance.

Check the drives to see wether they are set to master or slave or cable select, in the back jumpers.

Second unplug everytihng you added so the PC only has what it had originally.

Third, you can't just plug stuff in it has to be set properly.
If you are connecting a drive to a cable that already has something connnected to it, chances are whatever is conected is set as master, so you want to set whatver else you connect as slave. using the jumpers.

This is of course assuuming the HD's are IDE as well as the Cd burner. If you are using SATA drives then it doesn't really matter.

So check what they drives are set to, and post back.

Hello vacunita,
thanks for your quick reply.
Seagate HD has a label showing 5 different postions for the "jumpers".
The IBM doesn't have any label indicating "jumper" positions.
Am I correct in the assumtion that all Harddrives have the same "jumper" function in the same position? ie: the slave position on the IBM will be the same as the pins on the Seagate.

you can use cable select, but all drives (hdd and cd-rom) have to use the same setting. the primary drive will then be the first connector on the cable, and the secondary will be the second, for all drives. Hope this helps. argos.

Nope, each manufactuer has there own jumper positions for each state.

IBM if i'm not mistaken usually uses 2 jumpers for its settings, while Seagate and WD use only only one.

IBM's jumper settings according to my IBM drive is:

IDE Interface Jumper Power Plug
_____________ _______ _______
:::::::::::::| |*::::| {o o o o}
------------- ------- -------

Master is *B::B
Salve is *::BB
Cable Select: *:B:B

The "B" are the positions of the Jumpers.

Hello argus34,
thanks for help, just one question regarding the cable.
There is a connector at each end plus one additional connector in the middle of the cable. Am I correct in assuming that the 1st. end connector goes to MB and that the middle connector goes to the master and the second end connector to the slave?

hello vacunita,
thanks for IBM position list
My Seagate has 2 jumper positions for one function

Label reads as follows
:::: Slave
:::B Master or Single Drive
::B: Enable Cable Select
::BB Master with non ATA compatible Slave
B::: Limit Drive Capacity to 2.1 GB(4092 Cylinders)

Yes. the connector that is separated the most from the other 2 goes to the motherboard. It's usually blue. or has some indication that it is the motherboard end.

Hello vacunita,
thanks for info. just one point which you may be able to help with before I shut down and try these solutions out.
My current system is running Windows XP Pro, my Seagate also had XP but my old IBM had NT, will I suffer compatibility problems with old data formats or can XP read them without any problems.
Data is mainly Excel spreadsheets & Word docs with a few Photos also. There might also be some Powerpoint and MS Project data too, can't remember all of it.

You should not have any problems as NT used the same file system that XP does. NTFS. It should read fine unless there is a bigger problem with the drive.

Try getting the jumpers correctly set up, and check in the Bios before letting windows load, to see if all drives are picked up.

Just to clear things up about the ammount of jumpers used. Seagate and WD both use only one Jumper for the basic configurations that is Master,Slave and Cable Select.

Seagate as you pointed out offers an additional config for Master with non Ata compatible slave, which unless you know you have a drive that is not ATA compatible, you really don't use.

However IBM uses 2 jumpers for the basic configurations and up to 4 jumpers for additional configurations. Such as limiting the drive to 2GB only.
