------------------PLEASE HELP-------------------------
I installed my brand new ibm 40 gig hard drive the other day. I have both hard drives setup on my computer(drives c: and d: ) but It wouldnt work with windows 98, i was almost positive it was windows 98 causing the problem so i installed windows 2000 and both hard drives worked fine. Windows 2000 was driving me insane, it would constantly lock up and cause problems so i went back to 1 hard drive on 98. Id really like to get the 2nd hard drive working, after all i paid 90bux for it. The problem is caused when the computer first starts up. After flashing the 98 startup logo, the screen goes black and freezes. The c Heres a few facts ive gathered that might help in finding a solution:

- safe mode in 98 works find with both hard drive
- while doing the step by step startup, the drivers seam to b what cause the computer to freeze although i dont know how to find which driver it is that trigers the problem
- All the jumper settiings are ok(ive already had 3 people suggest i check that)

heres a thanks to any one who is willing to go out of there way to help some 1 else

Try running the machine with JUST the new drive in it. If the machine won't run with just the one drive, try another IDE cable. If that fails, try temperarily installing the drive in another machine, see if the problem follows it.

If you can get it to run with just the new drive, boot up and install '98 on it. If you can get through the install procedure, reboot it a couple of times, then leave it running for an hour or so; couple more reboots to test - that should prove the disk. Run something like "Genome@Home" on it overnight, if possible just to prove that the system is stable.

If the drive fails during either of the above tests, it could simply be faulty :-(

If you meet with success after doing the '98 install I suggested, just mount your current primary drive as a slave, and use the machine like that :)
