My D: drive (Maxtor 80GB) drive failed when I rebooted after a home power failure. Many "file segment" errors when CHKDSK runs on bootup.
I could not talk to it with XP Disk Management tool.
I used a Linux Recovery CD to erase all partitions on this second drive, and then created a new partition and ran mkfs (make filesystem) to put a FAT32 filesystem on the partition.
After that, XP disk management can see the disk and the partition, but when I tell it to format it, it says it is starting, but it has been 12 hours now and it is not finished.
Also the whole XP system is very slow. Windows are taking very long to open.
I had an old 2002 copy of Disk Doctor which I ran, and it did not show any errors.
Are there any freeware tools, like old Norton Disk Doctor, that I could use to see if this disk is just not reliable, and could that be why it is slowing down my system ?
