Ok what did I do wrong and whats the cure? thanks everyone!

nevermind i fixed it. I think the problem occured because the 2950 doesnt allow for .tar uploads to flash. I had to xmodem the new ios. Is it possible to tftpdnld an ios to flash for the 2950?

The .tar file contains more than just the IOS. For switches it usually contains HTML components for Cisco Network Assistant program for managing them. How you load a .tar file is as follows:
archive tax /x tftp://tftp_server_ip/filename.tar flash:

Sorry...canst spelz

archive /tar /x tftp://tftp-server-ip/filename.tar flash:

I would also suggest using something other than hyper-terminal. A lot of people use tera-term which is free download. Also suggest sloarwinds tftp server which is also free.

Messed it up again...sorry bout that...just back from vacation and left my brain on the beach.

Leave the / off in front of the word tar

archive tar /x tftp://tftp-server-ip/filename.tar flash:
