Hey there,

after getting my config closer to a working scenario I noticed that I had the wrong image loaded on my router in order to use the firewall and vpn features.

I sent all files VIA tftp to PC for backup. Now I've loaded a second image VIA tftp onto the flash. To be honest, I'm scared to start the process of booting from the new image. After reading forums and Cisco's site, I'm still not 100% sure I have my procedures sorted or have enough memory.

Should I drop the bomb?

Thanks for looking everyone.

I guess I'm worried that, even though they both fit on flash at the moment, when it decompresses it will be too big to boot.

Let me get this straight, I've been reading that dram and flash are different things. Does the router take the .bin file from flash and decompress it to Dram or something?

Thanks for the link Minue.

I had a look a while back at that page and did see that the memory requirements for both images were the same.

Minue didn't seem to worried about booting this new image... so neither am I. Minue, you're rock solid.

Here goes nothing.

it worked!

Here's the procedure I used:

Loading the New System Image from the Cisco IOS Software
This section describes how to load the new system image from the Cisco IOS software.

SUMMARY STEPS
1. dir flash:
2. configure terminal
3. no boot system
4. (Optional) boot system flash system-image-filename
5. (Optional) Repeat to specify the order in which the router should attempt to load any backup system images.
6. exit
7. show version
8. If the last digit in the configuration register is 0 or 1, proceed to Step 9. However, if the last digit in the configuration register is between 2 and F, proceed to Step 12.
9. configure terminal
10. config-register 0x2102
11. exit
12. copy run start
13. reload
14. When prompted to save the system configuration, enter no.
15. When prompted to confirm the reload, enter y.
16. show version

Rock!

It would have given you errors and would not have erased flash if it decompressed too big.

Burt

Thanks Burt.

It loaded the new image without probs.

I did get a meltdown when I tried to take a look at all my new features using SDM.

When installing SDM, it asked me if I wanted to install on PC, router, or both. I said both and when I logged in SHIT HIT THE FAN.

Here's a mess of crap taken from the, software forced, reboot. I've done some googling already and it looks like there could be some memory issues.

Yeah---not enough DRAM to run it on the router. Get it off the router!

Hey Burt,

I have noticed that everytime I've tried to browse to my router's GUI I get a reboot. Can you help me figure out what files I can delete from flash?

When I updated my image, I left some files there that I thought were important... but maybe they aren't. Or maybe those files relate to the old image and when my new image tries to use them they cause the reload.

Is SDM and the web interface GUI the same thing?

I would just like to see what all my IOS commands look like in SDM and vice versa.

Thanks, dude.

Sorry. I guess a sh flash would be a good idea. This looks pretty much how I left it after my first post above. The only difference should be that I have deleted my old image. I thought maybe I'd do a squeeze flash.. but I guess that's not a 2800 thing.

Thanks Minue,

It doesn't look like I can edit or delete posts. I have been trying to sort out the problems with this post. It seems to be clipping the right side of all the posts.

Here's another paste from my flash

I just wish I could delete all files and leave just enough to have my router run with my config. loaded.

Then I could hopefully run SDM from my PC without causing to router to crap out.

Hello
Can you post a "show processes cpu".In any case just delete the SDM files and install the SDM to a PC.If it still reloads let us know.
Regards

Well, there is a special process---you have to unzip (tar -xvf, like UNIX, I think) before you can delete them---it's a directory at the moment. I'll look up the doc. Same process as saving or updating the IOS on a Cat 3750 switch.

Burt

Hey! Thanks for having a look guys.

I just looked in the SDM install folder on my PC.
All the files (accept my image and vlan.dat file)
in my router's flash came from the SDM install I
did to the router a long time ago.

I have not deleted everything but the image file,
reloaded it, and once booted, I tried to hit the
router with SDM. I crashed still.

I then formatted flash and then tftp'd the image
back into flash, rebooted router, tried SDM and
the router crashed again.

I thought maybe I'd start deleting files in NVRAM
next. I can't believe this isn't documented...
I can't believe I'm the only one having this
problem :(

Thanks for looking into that, burt.

Minue, Here's that sho proc cpu. What kind of stuff are
you looking for in there? Do you want me to make it
crash and then capture this?

Hello
No need to send the show procceses cpu after the reload.I think it's an application problem.Try changing the version of SDM and make sure java is updated.
Regards

One more thing. SDM worked fine until
I upgraded from ipservices to
adventerpirse software. I'm going to
try to grab another copy of SDM and update
my java.

Thanks for coming back, Minue.

YEAH BABY!

So I reinstalled java, then downloaded
a new version of SDM and now it works.

Thanks Minue. And you too, Burt.
