I am scanning in documents for viewing on our lacal LAN using Full Acrobat 5 to scan the documents directly from the HP scanner into one document (75-100dpi). The first document is only 27 pages with a few graphics. It's quite difficult to understand why only 27 pages can be 36Mb. When looking at any e-book in pdf format you see the text perfect as well as the images and then 1000 pages are only about 15-25Mb. Is this due to scanning? Or how do I go about reducing the size of the pdf file

Do you have the full version of Adobe Acrobat? If so, I'd try printing your document to "Acrobat Distiller" and change the print quality to "screen". This will create a second, lower quality, smaller PDF.

There are a couple ways to change the print quality. Right click on Adobe Distiller from your Printers and choose Properties. Then, under General, choose Properties. Choose the "Adobe PDF Settings" tab and in the drop down box, select "Screen" (or experiment with the settings).
