Hello everyone,

I was basically given several 2610 routers to use for a CCNP lab. One of the routers is giving strange characters during the boot sequence. The hyperterminal session then shows no more input or output. The relevant portion is below:

cisco 2610 (MPC860) processor (revision 0x00) with 28672K/4096K bytes of memory.

Processor board ID JAD0635062B (752511127)
M860 processor: part number 0, mask 49
Bridging software.
X.25 software, Version 3.0.0.
Basic Rate ISDN software, Version 1.1.
1 Ethernet/IEEE 802.3 interface(s)
1 Serial network interface(s)
1 ISDN Basic Rate interface(s)
32K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory.
8192K bytes of processor board System flash (Read/Write)
GT#š

This last line - GT#š -is where it freezes. I have reset the baud to 9600 just in case and have also tried to connect to the console using minicom and I get the same results with more garbage characters.

Is there anyway to fix this? If not, is there any way for me to configure this router so I can at least connect to it by telnet?

Thanks,
BWM

I have found another doing the exact same thing. They are both 2610s. ARG!

have you tried putting the unit into rommon mode, does it display normally in that mode ?

Also, have you tried shunting the UART pins on the system board?

It seems to display normally in rommon. I have had it in rommon for 10 minutes or so without this happening.

I have connected pins 1 & 2 and booted - is this what you mean?

Yes---then unshort them and boot again. This forces the BAUD to be reset to 9600 (hard reset). Also, have you tried the AUX port? You can also console to it, the same way as with the console port...
