256Mb Max. for WIN98SE? 1

Hi all,
I read in a thread that Win98se only uses a max of 256mB RAM. Is this true and if so would it make sense to upgrade my os to allow me to use the 512mB I have? My system is P3 500Mz with an Elitegroup, P6BXT-A+ motherboard?
 
512 is OK. Anything over that requires special adjustments to avoid problems.

You "could" go up to win2K..- but for other reasons than 98 not handling the RAM. You can do a gig if you know exactly how to tweak it, but 512 is fine for most

- not up to XP recommended with 500mhz, though can be done....better be ready for some serious customization to keep it running decent

512MB is the maximum amount Win9x/ME can handle "efficiently". Anything higher than that can work with a little tweaking in Windows, but this "tweaking" essentially alters the way Windows VCache was designed to run. Hence, if you need more than 512MB, then I would upgrade the OS at that point to either 2000 or XP.
