I have a HP pavillion 550 monitor , and I can't 256 color on it . It only shows 2 options for color settings. Do I need to get the driver for the monitor or is it the video card ?

Most likely, you need to update the video card drivers. I wouldn't hurt to have the correct monitor.inf file, but if it was detected as a plug n play monitor it should be fine.

In my experience, it is usually the video card drivers. You can have a generic monitor (like default or plug & pray) and still see dozens of settings. The video card driver is the one that normally controls the colors and resolution. The only time it's the monitor drivers is if you have a brand selected that's not compatible with your video card driver settings...
