I was given a 2514 router, with no flash or DRAM, i bought
16MB of flash memory (2x8MB) and 16MB DRAM installed them in the router and attempted to load the 12.1b Enterprise IOS (c2500-js-l.122-1b.bin) but was unsuccessful on every attempt. have checked the cisco web site for help but obviously i am not using the right key words, here is the show ver info.

Hi,
You might need to partition the flash to allow it to work spanning 2 chips. Log into the router, go into global configuration (conf t) mode and issue this command:
partition flash 1 16
this will make 1 16MB partition.
I am assuming that the IOS is big enough to put onto the router and that you are able to make the IOS transfer.

PICK ME... PICK ME.. err.. wrong movie ;-)

Here is the clue--
::snip::
IOS (tm) 3000 Bootstrap Software (IGS-RXBOOT), Version 10.2(8a),
:::snip::

See the 10.2 ? this is the firmware of the router. This firmware is too old for the chipset you bought. In the old days, only 2 types of chips were accetable by Cisco.. Intel and Samsung if I remember right. Anything else would fail.

You have two choices.. either get replacement boot ROMs(11.x) on Ebay.. runs about 10 bucks.. or get replacement Flash that will work with this old firmware. Not all memory vendors know this historic gotcha.

You can get the boot rom for free from Cisco just pay for shipping. It will work with 8 meg the newer bootRom is needed for 16meg flash which is what you want anyway. Notice it didn't recognize the flash.
