This may sound like a dumb question but i just want to know if it is possible or not. I have a 2501 router that i want to connect on my home LAN. I bought the router at an auction and it only came with one serial cable connector with the male DB-25 on one end. I found out the hard way that cisco cables are hard to get a hold of, so i went to cisco.com and got the pinouts for the console port and sodered one together that did work. My question is that iam trying to do the same thing with the serial connector that came with it and use the pinouts from cisco to connect it to a netgear router. Basically making the cable into a DB-25 to RJ-45. Is this possible? Will I be able to connect it to the netgear router through the serial port?
Specs on the Router....

2 serial ports
1 ethernet
1 console
1 aux
It doesnt have a cisco IOS in flash. It boots from ROM using a subset of the IOS with basic configuration.

Thanks in advance for any help and hope i didnt confuse people too much.. :)

Tigerjoe007,

Bad news! The hardware that you descriped is for T1 or frame relay with CSD/DSU. If you bought the router and planned to use it for home use with cable or DSL modem, I think you bought the wrong router. I don't think you can make a serial port to work like a rj45 port even if you want to do it yourself. 2514 is what you need with aui converters to rj45. Beside, you router doesn't come with any IOS. If you have no connection with Cisco or friend that can get you IOS. The router that you have is useless.

Actually it does have an AUI port (ethernet), I gave up on the serial and now iam trying to find a converter. I dont really know what one looks like. I did get a hold of an IOS image file but loading it onto the router seems to be the problem since the only connection that i have right now is through the console port. My netgear router works fine for my home LAN, I just got this router for some hands on training to prepare me for the CCNA exam. So if you or anyone else can give me some insites on how to connect it through the AUI port to my home LAN it will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
BTW the CCNA exam does not cover too much on how to connect the router, it just covers alot on the configuration.

The AUI adapter is just a small box with the DB connector on one end and the RJ45 on the other.. should no more then 10 bucks on Ebay..

Get a back to back serial cable for the router... around 30 bucks.. you can run it between the two serial ports and practice WAN configs.. simple ones to be sure but practice nevertheless...

You need a TFTP server to practice the loading of configs and IOS. I have a few at my site which are free. When you get the IOS make sure it will fit into the size of FLASH you have and that you have enough DRAM.. each IOS load has specifications on this. Get it at the cisco site.
