I will soon be teaching some basic Cisco elements and do not want to have to network all the machines as the sessions will be focusing on the actual configuration of Cisco Routers, I plan to do this via the console interface. I want to be able to ping the remote router and so the interface needs to be brought up. The configs are basic and work fine if I plug a computer into e0 via a reverse patch lead or use a hub. However I decided to make a loopback lead in the hope that I could use the port's own link beat signal to bring the interface up. This worked except I now receive "excess collisions" on e0. My loop back adapter was wired thus

pin1 - pin3
pin2 - pin6

Am I being a muppet and wrongly wiring the adaptor?

It's even easier then that..

interface E0
ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0
no keepalive

This brings up the E0 port without regard to if there is linkstate or not. Give it a try
