Is Cisco memory the same as that used in a PC? I have a 2516 router that only has 6MB, and if I'm not mistaken, you need at least 8MB to run IOS 12? To me it just looks like old 72 pin 70 nS parity memory.
 
Yes and no.. the older bootroms would check for one of two brands of memory chips. Intel and some other brand I have forgotten off the top of my head. If you did not have those brands of chips, it would not boot. The newer bootroms fix that stupid problem and will allow any brand of memory chip.
