I was wondering if it is possible to do my weekly backups to the MAT, then move those files to a NAS (offsite). Then in the event of a disaster take those files and copy to a PCMCIA card that has been prepped with the system cd. Would this work to bring up a new or repaired system?

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Gary I am familiar with how to do the backup, what I am trying to find out is can those files be recovered from the NAS to the PCMCIA that has been prepped with system files.
Making a useable backup to restore a new or repaired switch.

I am trying to kill 2 birds at once, offsite storage of backup and hassle of the whole backup to a spare PCMCIA card.

My office is located in a different building than the 2400.

Thanks

With the IPX you remove the card, insert it in your PC and use the file converter to save it to disk. The same programme is used to put it back onto the card so basically the answer is yes. Unless of course you are using some weird way of backing up the IPX in America, I don't think I've ever done a hdd_Fdd save on an IPX.

Ozzie,

In theory I thought this should work. I use MEM_HDD then
HDD_MAT. Just wanted to get some input from the more experienced before I fully implemented this backup procedure.

Thanks

Mmm... learned this one the hard way.

When you do a MEM_HDD, that's fine and dandy... it writes the *OFFICE DATA* to the flash card.

When you pull the card out and put it in your laptop and use the software to back up the flash card to your pc, once again, it backs up *OFFICE DATA*, it doesn't do a complete backup, as you might think.

SOoooooo... to have a complete disaster recovery plan, you would also need your software CD if you were going to recreate the flash card.

If I was going to do a disaster recovery plan, I would probably have *another* Flash card, install the system software and licensing on it, restore my most recent backup to it, and take the entire flash card (ready to boot and run) offsite.

I learned the hard way (failed flash card in a redundant system), that just putting a flash card in the redundant CPU, backing up from the one and restoring to the other *DOES NOT WORK*. You must actually initialize the flash card in a PC with the system CDRom, *THEN* you can copy from one CPU to the other.

Just my 2¢

Hehehe....

Reminds me of a story................

A coworker of mine and I were installing a new IPX (IPX had just been released). He was told to format the flash in his PC. So he slid the flash drive into his Laptop and a window came up " Format C:\" He figured this was correct and hit enter. That was the end of his laptop.

BE careful........

Ever set a backup going only to realise the wrong box is ticked and found you are actually doing a restore! then frantically trying to stop it because you don't know what has been done since the last backup. Fortunately only lost 1 change as most of the techs were reasonably dilligent in doing backups.
