I need to install a soft phone on a laptop that will access the Internet via a cable modem. The BCM 50 is connected to a network that has Internet access via DSL. Will I need to purchase a VPN tunnel client for the laptop, and a tunnel and IP set liscense for the BCM 50?

Thanks

If you do not yet have an IP client then Yes to the license. As to the VPN client, that depends on how you remotely access your network. You will need some form of VPN client, but you may already be using MS VPN or some such.

Magna, I asked for it before, but I'm still curious.. any idea why it is fairly easy to register a softphone to a BCM 400 remotely without setting up a VPN, whereas it is impossible to do so with the bcm 50?

It's not impossible as long as the 50 has a public IP address, is directly connected and that IP is it's published IP.

However there have been umpteen posts debating the merits of VPN access versus direct public access. I stand firmly on the side of VPN and have posted my reasonings.

There is no rocket science as to a 50 vs a 400 for registering an IP set.

Thanks for answering...I feel like I'm hijacking the thread, but since there is no private msg option on the forums...

Unlike what is found on the BCM 400, there is no such thing as a published IP address on the BCM 50... It's lan address can be a public one, but every time I tried I got the phone to 'see' the BCM, but not to register, even if everything worked when plugging the phone in the same subnet...

I tried with a 50e as well, with it's router set up one-to-one to the BCM, with the exact same result.

Enough for now, I'll try once more with our 50e demo and I'll write down all the details in a new thread, and I hope you'll get to see it, as I would like to find out what I'm missing..thanks again!
