throw this out,, for consideration,, one of the "techs", here at work, is building on the ESX VM's a 2008 server,, with a 2008 sql,, both 64 bits. Now that ths=e sql is installed on the server,, it "locks up",, all the time.. ideas??? Anyone run into this before??? I believe the ESX is 3.5..

What locks up? The server or SQL? Event logs indicate anything?

Well,, everything,, since it is a VM,, you can not get it to respond to anything,, event logs do not show anything..

With the general info provided, it could be just about anything. There could be issues with SQL, issues with Windows, or issues with the VM. It could even be resource contention between that VM and other VMs.

Step one is to look at the SQL and Windows logs to see what's going on when it locks up. I would also recommend looking in the performance history of the VM and look for correlations between lockups and spikes in utilization for memory, CPU, disk, and network.

How many processors does this VM have assigned to it? How heavily utilized is the ESX host that it is running on? Was the storage solution adequately sized to accommodate the SQL workload?

If there indeed is nothing in the server event logs, then I'd be looking at the ESX server. Do other VM's lockup? Does the entire ESX server lockup or just this one VM?

ESX 3.5 is old.

my guess is the ESX,, I not sure where the 3.5 is in service paks, etc. I hear they have plans to upgrade to the newer version, where there is support for 2008, esp the 64 bit,, but thanks for looking boys and girls..

ESX 3.5 is old.

No it's not. ESX 4.0 was just released this past fall, and ESX 3.5 was the last major release before 4.0. So 4 months ago ESX 3.5 Update 5 was the most current release.

Windows 2008 with SP1 (both 32 and 64 bit versions) has been supported since ESX 3.5 Update 2.

my guess would be that the updates have never been applied,, Last time they did a new version install,, we almost lost every server in the world, and we were down for 2 days. So I do not think they have ever applied any uypdates.

ESX 3.5 is old software, it's been replaced with ESX 4.0 Update 1, that was my point and I'm pretty sure everyone understood what I was saying. And he didn't mention if he has any Updates applied, so going by the original post, my comment is indeed accurate...ESX 3.5 is old.

But...to be clear, I'll revise my comment.

ESX 3.5 is not the current release of the VMWare product.

I hope that doesn't offend anyone.
