2008 R2 to be a file server (FS01)
2008 R2 running as a Hyper-V host (Hyper-V1)- Runs 5 VMS, 2 Windows 2003, 3 Windows 2008.

From FS01 I cannot ping any of the VMs but I can ping all other physical servers, including Hyper-V1. From any of the VMs I cannot ping FS01 but can ping all other servers, again, including Hyper-V1

Firewalls are off on all servers....
DNS is working properly as I can see the name being resolved correctly when I do the ping but get a response stating that the destination address is unreachable. All servers are on the same subnet.

I only noticed this as one of the VMs is the AV update server and FS01 could not update its AV.

Suggestions/ideas as to what is going on gratefully received.

Actually it's not 2008 R2 that's the problem. I blew away the r2 install and put 2008 on it and still have the same problem. I also noticed that pings to the machine seem to drop randomly but pings from the machine are fine..

I've either got something really weird something going on or something so simple that I'm missing it :)

The server is a poweredge 2900 and used to run 2003 and I never had any problems with it.

So far I've updated the BIOS, updated the NIC firmware and driver and still no joy.

Thanks but it does not appear to to be that.

The Hyper-V server has 2 nics in it, 1 for management and 1 dedicated for the VMs.

The problem is from this poweredge 2900 I cannot ping or connect in any way to the virtual machines nor can I ping the 2900 from any of the virtual machines. But I can ping and connect to the VMs from all other servers/pcs and ping from VMs to all other servers/PCs on the network.

Also on the 2900 pings from it to any network device are steady but if I send continuous pings to the 2900 there are several dropped.

As I said the box previously had 2003 on it and never had any problems.. I may blat it back to 2003 and see what happens..

arghhhhhhh. I knew this would make me look dumb....

The problem was a duplicate mac address. The server in question (the poweredge 2900) was running 2003 web edition and was p2v'd.
Obviously during the p2v it kept the mac address of the physical server and assigned that as a static mac on the virtual machine.

Problem sorted by powering the virtual machine down and changing the mac to dynamic.
