I have a 2008 R2 RDS Licensing Server configured to handout CALs per device connected to the terminal services. This is a mixed environment meaning I have a few 2008 servers, but mostly 2003 servers. It is taking a while to issue permanent CALs to devices thought it is working. Occasionally I will get a message saying unable to issue "The Remote Desktop license server "TRMSRV" does not have any remaining permanent Remote Desktop Services client access licenses (RDS CALs) of the type "Windows Server 2003 - TS Per Device CAL". As a result, the Remote Desktop license server cannot issue RDS CALs of the type "Windows Server 2003 - TS Per Device CAL"" Though I show plenty available. I have both 2003 and 2008 CALs installed.
I have three questions:
1. Do I really need to install the Windows Server 2003 - Per Device CAL? I noticed before I installed that the server issued a temporary CAL for those 2003 servers. I am not sure if eventually it would have upgraded them to permanent with a 2008 CAL. I am not sure if it works like, or you have to have that distinguished 2003 CAL installed.
2. Do the 2003 CALs and 2008 CALs share the same license pool? Say I have 1500 licenses installed for each using the same Agreement Number. If I am using 1400 of one will the other only have 100 left to use?
3. I notice a lot of non-domain computers getting permanent CALs. This will do against my numbers. Is this usual? Is there a way to only allow domain computers to get permanent CALs and non-domain computers only get temporary?
