Hey all,

I've just got my 2008 windows server and this is my first time using this operating system..

So I've set up the domain and active directory.. I was able to install terminal services and the Cals for TS.. but I cannot seem to find where to install my actual Server CALs?

i'm not sure if this is the reason, but when I created a new user in the active directory .. by default it said the method i'm using to log on is not allowed .. and It's not like windows to "PRE-DENY" anything .. so i'm not sure where to look .. i'm assuming it's a CAL issue... though i thought it came with 5

ok solved my issue with the user not being able to log in, the GPO for some reason was not set to allow domain users to log in.

I still don't know where to add server CALs though.

You don't actually need to. Like previous versions of Windows, there might be a tool to help you keep track of CALs, but it's not required. And frankly, it's a pretty poor tool anyway.

ah, I was not aware of that thanks.

It seems MS has opt'd to lock everything out in this version unless you say to allow it.. a good practice, but something to get used to for sure.

They did something similar with 2003 as well, it's just that it's more extreme in 2008. The rationale is that the less that is installed and enabled from the beginning, the more secure the system is by default.
