hello again,

I started at a new employer today.

I requested acces to SQL Server 2005 server. Now I can access the databases etc, create databases.

But in Logins, there is no login for me. I seem to have the sysadmin server role, but I'm puzzled as to how I'm set up.

Any ideas?

Thanks. John

If you are a sysadmin under the local or domain administrators in Windows, then you are accessing SQL Server via the BUILTIN\Administrators login.

When I view my connection in Management Studio, it has Domain\jbates.

They may have made me a domain administrator, but I didn't know that would automatically give me sysadmin rights in SQL Server.

I'm new to 2005.

Thanks, John

if you are a local admin or a member of one of the groups that is a local admin on the server and they have left the built-in admin account in sql server then that is how you are logging in. With Built-in admin. From a security point of view you should never leave that account active.

BTW: The security setup of allowing members of the local Administrator group admin access to the SQL Server by default has been around for ever (at least since SQL 6.5).

If anyone remembers if it's been around longer feel free to speak up. 6.5 is the oldest version that I've looked at in years.
