We are looking at upgrading from SQL server 2003 to 2005. We currently have SQL 2003 and as I understand it 2003 is basically 2000 with some extra features here and there. Is that also true with 2005 and 2008? If they operate the same I think we should go ahead and upgrade to 2008 and skip 2005 all together. We have several third party applications that support 2005 but not sure on 2008 but if they are essentailly the same I would think going to 2008 should not be an issue. Thoughts?

SQL Server 2005 is a major upgrade from SQL Server 2000. SQL Server 2008 is a decent sized upgrade from SQL Server 2005.

All vendor apps should be tested and certified by the vendor before upgrading them new a new database platform.
